$20,000 for Training for Church Planting

Project Leader: Edwin Marsden

Training for Church Planting...Penan communities were predominantly nomadic up until the 1950s. Total population is 10,000 only. The Penan came to national and international attention when they resisted logging operations in their home territories of the Baram, Limbang, Tutoh, and Lawas regions of Sarawak. The Penan's struggle began in the 1960s when the Indonesian and Malaysian governments opened up large areas of Borneo's interior to commercial logging. In most cases, the largest and most lucrative logging concessions went to members of the island's political and business elites.

Edwin and ICM have been working with the local churches in Sarawak, Malaysia, since 1995. As they take further steps to come alongside with local churches in Sarawak, Malaysia to reach out to the tribal groups including the Penan, they have signed MOU with SIB Sarawak, Malaysia and set up a new operational office in Kuching as parts of this strategy to train ordinary people using ICM materials to plant new churches. Currently, 10 Penan Pastors are waiting to be sent out to plant churches.
